I need help with geometry proofs!?

Hi, I am a student in 9th grade and I need help with geometry isosceles triangle proofs. For example, in one problem I have to make a proof to show that line CD is perpendicular to the hypotenuse AB. But, what I don't understand is that it tells me D is the midpoint of AB! So, why is a proof needed?
