Minecraft Biomes question (Not just asking what biomes are)?

What I am asking is so does it literally make the map have multiple "sections" that are different climates? like if I get in a boat (in a desert climate) and sail randomly I will end up in a snowy climate or something? I cannot get this exact answer online, sorry if I am being stupid
