Honestly, you'll never know if it comes to word of mouth or doentation. It sounds like you totally lack both. The only thing I could suggest is perhaps DNA. You can do DNA testing for genealogical purposes via sites like Ancestry.com. While the database isn't very extensive at the moment it's constantly growing and new avenues for the use of DNA are constantly being explored and implemented. I can't say you'll have success with this but your genetic profile will remain in the database for future use.
