Why do stop signs in Ecuador say alto instead of stop?

It all means the same thing, and they are not going to have the word "STOP" because it is obviously a Spanish speaking Country, therefore there 1st language, and they have several different words that gave one or two different meaning's, like in the English language, the word,"can" has two different meaning's, I "can not go to the dance. Also, 'I opened up a "can" of soup, so they have the same thing going on with different word's meaning several different meaning to them.
