Is anyone familiar with the filing process. i know it may vary, i am in california.?

This is for Family court services. Do I need to add a declaration for an upcoming court date and forget the process; is it fill out proof of service, mail, file copies with proof of service with the court house or is it take to courthouse and have stamped "filed" then mail, have proof of service filled out and return to courthouse and have proof of service filed at courthouse. im confused and forgetful?
