My dog has phlegm. How to cure...?

My dog, a apoo, sounds like he has phlegm/mucous in the throat. He's tried to cough it up a few times. Why does he have this phlegm? It doesn't seem too severe. Will it go away on it's own or is some type of treatment needed? Thanks
