On Virtual Villagers: The lost children how do I make the tools?

I can't find the rock behind the scientists hut which is supposed to be used to create the tools for cutting down the thick thorns?? where is it? also, I have level 3 for food, which means i can hunt down fish, but for some reason my farmers never go to do it on their own, only when I put them into the sea...this is very annoying, as I don't want to spend forever more picking them up and putting them over there, when they should automatically do it! any ideas?!
