Why can't I use AMD Overdrive?

I'm not a big fan of AMD overdrive. I had a 9600 Phenom 2.3ghz processor that I always overclocked on my 790X Gigabyte board to 2.42ghz in bios. Well I overclocked using AMDOD to 2.5ghz and it blue screened to never boot again. Something with that program is unreliable with some hardware. It blew the motherboard and the ram... Luckily Gigabyte and G.Skill was greatful enough to RMA the board and the ram with no questions asked. Ironically the system was 8 months old and I never expected them to really do anything...
